From John Jay to Timothy Dwight, 16 December 1802

To Timothy Dwight

Bedford 16 Decr 1802

Sir

I take the Liberty of addressing you on a Subject wh. is not a little interesting to me— on leaving Albany I committed to the Revd. Mr Ellison1 the Care & Education of a Son2 whom I think a good & promising Boy, and who is now abt. 13 Years old. That ^On that^ Gentleman’s Death he returned to me—I have tried to ^As was my wish to have him^ placed here in a proper Situation near me; but ^as^ that cannot be accomplished, ^and due attention to his morals & manners, as well as ^^to his^^ Learning being indispensable,^ I have concluded to request the favor of You to recieve and keep him in your Family and under your Tuition & Care, not only while you may be perfecting his Preparation for College ^may be passing[?] perfecting^ but also while he shall remain in ^it^. I am [illegible] But[?]. Be pleased to inform me as soon as may suit your Convenience whether you will accept this Charge and on what Terms—3

I flatter myself that this Letter will be considered [illegible] proof of ^I flatter myself that^ this Letter will convince the Respect and Esteem with wh I have the Honor to be Sir Your most obt. Servt
