Daniel Lescallier (1743–1822), French diplomat and writer on maritime topics, produced maps of the West Indies and studied marine life during a two-year visit to Saint Domingue starting in 1764. He was named colonial prefect to Guadeloupe in 1800 and met TJ when he returned to France via the United States in 1803. Napoleon named Lescallier consul general to the United States in 1810, and he held that position until 1815. He initially remained in New York after the French emperor’s fall from power but died in Paris (Biographie universelle description begins Biographie universelle, ancienne et moderne, new ed., 1843–65, 45 vols. description ends , 24:287–90; Lescallier to TJ, 12 May 1817).

In his favour of 25 Feb. 1809 (CSmH: JF-BA), TJ had acknowledged Lescallier’s letter of 11 Sept. 1808 (MoSHi: TJC-BC) enclosing a copy of his Vocabulaire des Termes de Marine Anglais et Français (Paris, 1798; Sowerby, description begins E. Millicent Sowerby, comp., Catalogue of the Library of Thomas Jefferson, 1952–59, 5 vols. description ends no. 1232).
