1. GW’s reads: “To Cash recd of Mr Frans Whiting on Acct of Rent by the hands of Thos Whiting.”
2. Immediately after this entry in the GW has recorded: “To 1 Hhd of Rent Tobo Recd from Saml Halley SH No. 4[—]1064[—]99[—]965.”
3. GW’s adds: “on Acct of things sold at Colo. Fairfax’s Sale—wch credit Colo. Fairfax with.”
4. According to the , this was “recd from Captn Richd Conway—viz. 308 Md Papr Dollars [and] 192 silvr Do” for a total of “500 @ 6/. Note the above silvr Dollars were changd with Mr Richd Harrison for Paper ones who is to return them again for Paper ones.”
5. Thomas Jefferson’s A Summary View of the Rights of British America was printed on Clementina Rind’s press probably about 8 Aug., after the convention adjourned on 6 August. See , 1:240–56.
6. Clementina Rind’s press printed about two thousand copies of a broadside containing the Virginia Association that was signed in convention on 6 August. This Association served as a model for the one adopted by the First Continental Congress on 20 October. 13. This “Rolling Machine” is undoubtedly the newly designed threshing machine for which the Virginia Society for the Advancement of Useful Knowledge gave inventor John Hobday a medal and reward at their meeting in June 1774 (see , 3:256, and Cash Accounts, June, n.14). On 19 Nov. 1772 John Hobday placed a notice in the Virginia Gazette (Purdie and Dixon; Williamsburg) asking that “some Gentlemen in every County set on Foot a Subscription for raising such Sums as they may think the Invention” of his new threshing machine deserved. The machine, which separated wheat from straw, would “beat out a Hundred and twenty Bushels a Day, with three Horses, or in that Proportion with a greater or less Number.” He claimed the new machine could be made “by any tolerable Carpenter” for £15 at most, “and if made by Gentlemens own Servants will not exceed twenty Shillings.” Thomas Nelson, David Jameson, Jaquelin Ambler, and John Page of Rosewell signed a statement indicating they had examined a model of the threshing machine and believed it would serve the purpose. On 2 Dec. 1773 John Hobday inserted a notice in the same newspaper informing the public that he would set out in April to the James and York river area to give instructions to those who intended to erect his wheat machines. His brother Isaac Hobday would go to “Counties on Rappahannock and Potowmack Rivers” to do the same. There followed a list of the lumber needed for building the machine, including a platform for it which was to be used with four horses, or could be modified for two horses. Among the materials needed were “4 Rollers 3 Feet 6 Inches long, and 18 Inches Diameter, of Gum, Oak or Walnut.” On 19 May 1774 a petition was presented by Hobday in the House of Burgesses asking for a reward for “his Endeavors to serve the Community,” and on 20 May a sum of £100 was voted for Hobday’s use (, 111–12, 116–17).
14. Under the date of 14 Aug. in the , GW listed £477.5.3 as his “Cash on hand this day.” Among other entries, dated 23 Aug. and not recorded in his cash accounts, are: “Charge Mr Hugh Hamilton with a Servt Man named Willm Orr al[ia]s Cunningham . . . 15.00[,] Charge Captn Conway with 1545½ Bushl of Indn Corn deld Cap: Ths Conway @ 2/ also with 1200 Bushl deliverd formerly at Do,” and “Charge Mr Willm Herbert with 4 dozn of Claret (pr his Letter) furnishd for the Boat Race [at Clifton’s ferry] in May last @ 48/ Maryld Cy pr dozn.” For the boat race, see , 3:248–49.
