John Jay Papers

Peter Jay to James Jay, 15 February 1763

Peter Jay to James Jay

[Rye,] 1763, Feb. 15th.

My last was the 15 ulto., and have since received your letters of the 30 Sept., 5 Octob: & 6 Novr. last.1 hearing so frequently from you is indeed a very great Satisfaction to us, and the more so, as it shews you are very sensible to our affection for you, and the pleasure it must consequently give us, it would be still greater if we could hear that your own affairs do answr, at least in some measure, the intention of your going abroad.

This goes via Bristol, where, as per one of yr. Letters, you intended soon a Visit to our Good Relations. I hope you’ve been Mindfull of Fady if he can be of service there, I’m indeed ashamed to mention it My Self to Cousin Peloquin, as his kindness to us is already beyond measure, altho I’m greatly at a loss for a proper Place for the Boy at York. he is greatly improved since you left us and I think him extremely well qualified for his apprenticeship. Johnny goes on bravely at College, he is still determined to Study the Law, so that I shall be greatly at a Loss abot: him, As, you know, the Attorneys at York have agree’d among themselves to take no Clerks, that intend to Practice the Law, to write in their Offices, and therefore I should be very glad if you could get him to write in the Office of some Attorney, in full Business, Either in London or Bristol, The last I would chuse, as he would ^then^ be under the immediate care of Cousin Peloquin, and I suppose your stay in London will not be long enough to have him under yours. I intend to write some time this Spring to Cousin Peloquin abot. it, and in the mean time, if you go to Bristol, it will not be amiss that you consult wth him abot. it. Johnny will pass his Degrees at College abot. 15 months hence, his behaviour continues very good & discreet. Blessed be God, we all continue tollerable well and remember our love to you. I am
