From John Jay to Peter Augustus Jay, 13 October 1812

To Peter Augustus Jay

Bedford 13th. Octr. 1812

Dear Peter

Nancy returned on Thursday last, and to appearance as well as when she left us— I am happy to learn from your Letter of the 7th Inst1. that Mary and the children had arrived in safety— We have recd. the Rusk &c.—

If the Question respecting Mr. Farmer should be submitted to the Convention, inform me of the Result.

Have you obtained Mr. Rutherfurds opinion of the value of Pettits Farm? Martin Ryerson is inclined to buy it.2

What has been decreed by the Chancellor respecting the money brought into his Court by the Ex[ecuto]rs. of Jams. Duance dec[ease]d. Trustee for the Creditors of Peter DuBois? Have you heard of or from Mr. Featherstonhaugh, on that Subject?3

I presume a Settlement of the account between Mr. Munro and me, will not be accomplished until after his Return from Albany.

I have recd. your Letter of the 9th. Inst.—4 John found your Letter to Reynolds at the post office, and delivered it to him—5 Unless you receive from Ab. Wright, in Season, assurances of speedy Paymt., let not the Term be lost, but proceed agt. him.

The Packet you mention contains Subscription Papers, sent by B^r^adford & Inskip printers at Ph[iladelphi]a.,6 for printing & publishing the Memoirs of Genl. Henry Lee, relative to the revolutionary war in the Southern States— Open the packet— Letters and have passed between his Brother Richd. Bland Lee & myself on the Subject— He will expect my Endeavours to promote the Subscription, and I wish to do it— they have been constantly among the Number of my Friends— the General deserves well for his military Services, and his Treatment at Baltimore should excite the Feelings of the Federalists— I think the Committee of the Friends of Peace at New York, and the Washington Society will probably be inclined to encourage the Sale of this Work in a proper Manner. And I wish that may be [the] case, not only from political motives, but because the Proceeds must be interesting to the Genl. & him ^his^ Family, and because Endeavours to serve him & them will make grateful Impression— These Considerations will I am persuaded induce you to promote these objects speedily and strenuously— Let our Friends always see that our Friendship as worth having and preserving.— The proper measures to be taken are obvious, and need not be suggested to You—7

The Fever which prevailed here last Spring, again appears— Our Friend Coll. Benj. Green died of it last week—8 his Son in Law Graham, & Mr. Platt of Bedford are ill with it—

I am glad that it will appear so clearly to the arbitrators, that Stagg’s Claims and Complaints are not well founded— [illegible] Our Love to Mary I am Dr Peter Your very affte. Father

John Jay

[Here Jay enclosed a letter to Richard Bland Lee of 7 Sept. 1812, above]

Get from Lorillard a Keg of about 25 or 30 lb of mild smoking Tobacco for me— Brandy I fear will be scarce, and ours runs low— Procure a Demijohn of the best— I am more anxious to secure than to receive it speedily—
