12 January 1802, Department of State. “The Secretary of State presents his respects to the Secretary of the Treasury and has the honor to enclose a copy of a letter lately received from Samuel Cabot Esqr. together with the letter from the Secretary of State therein referred to.”1

1. The enclosures (2 pp.) are copies of JM to Cabot, 22 Aug. 1801, and Cabot to JM, 30 Dec. 1801 ( , 2:59–60, 354–55). In his 30 Dec. 1801 letter Cabot referred not to a letter from JM but to a 14 Sept. 1801 letter from Gallatin (ibid., 2:354, 355 n. 1).
