6. Business partners Jeremiah Wadsworth and John Barker Church had come to France the previous summer to collect on debts owed them by the French government: XXXVIII, 546n; XL, 263–4. At that time Church was using the alias “Carter,” a practice he would continue until at least February, 1784, when he and his wife, Angelica, sent BF a dinner invitation as “Mr & Mrs Carter”: XLI, 542.
On Feb. 9, 1784, in answer to a request from Angelica Carter, a M. d’Aboville sent her the address of a Turinese physician, de Perse, whose powder was reputed to cure severe gravel without causing any side effects. She must have passed on this letter to BF, as an extract of it, in L’Air de Lamotte’s hand, is among his papers at the APS.
7. In Wadsworth’s hand.
