To John Jay from William Livingston, 11 September 1787

From William Livingston

Philad: Sep 11. 1787

Dr Sir

I received your Letters of the 6th & 7th1 at the same time, & am obliged to you for transmitting Mr Kempes by the Packet, as it will be of real importance to him if he receives it before the commissioners he mentions have finally reported relative to his confiscated property in the State of New Jersey. I am also obliged to you for your promise of paying me a visit on my return to Elizabeth Town & the more so as there is another promise annexed ^to^ it, of bringing with you a certain little gentleman whom I greatly long to see—2 I shall inform you of my arrival without loss of time—But my hopes of returning by the time expected are a little clouded by reason of there being certain creatures in this world that are more pleased with their own speeches than they can prevail upon any body else to be. I am Sir your most humble & affectionate servant

Wil: Livingston

The honble John Jay Esqr

ALS, NNC (EJ: 6898). Addressed: “The honorable John Jay Esqr / Secretary for foreign Affairs / New York—”. Endorsed.

1See JJ to Livingston, 6 Sept., above, and 7 Sept. 1787, ALS, MHi (EJ: 4735). In his letter of the 7th, JJ notes that their letters had become crossed.

2Peter Augustus Jay.
