ALS, NNC (EJ: 09056). For JJ’s reply, see his letter to Longworth, 28 Oct. 1809, below. David Longworth (c. 1765–1821), New York publisher most known for Longworth’s New York Register, as well as plays, prints, and maps. He also had a business in Charleston, S.C.

1David Ramsay (1749–1815), Pennsylvanian-born Charleston-based physician, politician, and historian. His history of the American Revolution first appeared in 1789, and subsequently went through six American editions, as well as English, Irish, French, German, and Dutch editions. Ramsay and JJ had become acquainted in New York while Ramsay was a member of the Continental Congress. JJ had assisted Ramsay during the 1780s–90s with the Van Horne affair, a legal action involving the payment of a large sum owed by Ramsay to Ann Van Horne.
