To John Jay from Foxes & Sons, 3 November 1818

From Foxes & Sons

Falmouth 3rd November 1818

Esteemed Friend,

It is with the deepest concern that we beg to trouble thee on the occasion of the death of our highly valued relative Robert Were Fox,1 who has ever since the time of American Independance held the situation of Consul in this and the neighbouring ports, with the entire approbation of the American Government, of which he has received repeated testimonies.

We have now to request that thee wilt be so kind as to recommend his Son our Robert Were Fox,2 whose ability integrity and experience render him adequate to any employment of trust and confidence, and we have therefore to solicit the intervention of thy friendship on his behalf, in recommending him to the appointment so long and so respectably held by his lamented Father. We are, very respectfully, Thy assured Friends,

Foxes & Sons3

To John Jay Esqr, New York

ALS, NNC (EJ: 09094). “Foxes & Sons” could be any number of business concerns of the extended Quaker family in the West country.

2Robert Were Fox the Younger (1789–1877), Fellow of the Royal Society (1848), was an inventor and geoscientist, who succeeded his father as consul. ODNBO.
