ALS, Andrew Ellicott Papers, Library of Congress.

1Ellicott was a surveyor and mathematician who had worked for both Virginia and Pennsylvania. In 1789, when he moved from Baltimore to Philadelphia, he was appointed by the Federal Government to fix the southwestern boundary of New York.

2New York ceded the lands in question to the Confederation government in 1780. For the eventual acquisition of these lands by Pennsylvania, see Thomas Mifflin to H, May 5, 1791, note 1.
