[New York, July 15, 1793.] Recommend John Tanner for the post of first mate of the New York revenue cutter.2

1Randall was superintendent of the lighthouse at Sandy Hook, New Jersey. This letter was also signed by eighteen prominent New York City businessmen.

This letter, which is undated, has been dated on the basis of Tanner’s other letters of recommendation. See Comfort Sands to H, July 15, 1793; Benjamin Walker to H, July 15, 1793.

2H submitted letters of recommendation for Tanner to George Washington on July 20, 1793. Tanner was appointed first mate of the New York revenue cutter Vigilant on July 23, 1793 (JPP description begins “Journal of the Proceedings of the President,” George Washington Papers, Library of Congress. description ends , 184).
