V W southall encloses Mr Jefferson $100—the amount advanced is $910, exclusive of $250 for which Mr J. has already draughted. Should Mr J. contemplate an abscence from Albemarle beyond the 10th or 11th of July, VWs. would beg a draught before he starts—otherwise, it will answer after he returns—wishing him a pleasant trip, VWs. begs him to accept the assurance of his respect & esteem.

Between 8 May 1817 and this date TJ borrowed $910 from Southall to cover various plantation expenses. On 27 June, before his departure for Poplar Forest, TJ obtained a further $80 from him in cash, and he repaid Southall for the entire sum on that date with a draft on Gibson & Jefferson for $990. On 7 Apr. 1817 TJ had borrowed $250, for which he reimbursed Southall by a draft on Gibson & Jefferson on 15 Apr. ( , 2:1331–5).
