Mr Sidney George’s agent in this City, was not punctual in performing his promise, so that it was not till the day before yesterday that I received five hundred & eighty nine dollars & eighty seven cents in full of the principal & interest due on Mr George’s bond passed to you as surviving Executor of the late Coll Colville.1 Agreeably to your request, I propose to retain thirty dollars, as a compensation for my services, & the balance of five hundred & fifty nine Dollars & eighty seven cents, remains ready to be paid to your order in this City at sight, or to be remitted to you immediately if you desire it—I can easily procure post Notes from one of the banks, which may be forwarded with little or no risque. I beg the favor of your directions on this subject,2 & have the honor of being with the highest respect, yr most ob. servt

2On 4 Sept., GW sent a note to Tilghman: “Whenever it shall be convenient to Mr Tilghman, the Presid’t will receive the money which he has obtained from Mr George, with a statement of the account,—The sum charged by Mr Tilghman the P. thinks very reasonable, and is willing to allow it” (printed in Washington and Tilghman Correspondence, Thomas Birch’s Sons catalog #683, 5–6 April 1892, item 769). The payment of £9 as Tilghman’s fee is recorded with a date of 16 Aug. in Ledger C description begins General Ledger C, 1790–1799. Morristown National Historical Park, Morristown, N.J. description ends , 15. GW’s account with Tilghman, 17 June–4 Sept., includes GW’s receipt dated 4 Sept.: “Received the above sum of Five hundred and fifty nine dollars and 87/100 Cents in full” (typescript, in private hands); GW also recorded that receipt in an entry of 4 Sept. in his Cash Accounts, 29 Sept. 1794–17 Aug. 1797 (RPJCB).
