1The letter from Lt. Conolly Coane to Gen. William Howe has not been identified. Coane, who had been appointed an ensign in the 62d Regiment in September 1773 and promoted to lieutenant in December 1775, was captured when Lt. Gen. John Burgoyne surrendered at Saratoga in October 1777. Coane was not exchanged at this time, but in 1780 he obtained a parole to his native Ireland (see GW to Board of War, 25 June 1780, DLC:GW; JCC description begins Worthington Chauncey Ford et al., eds.
