From George Washington to John Greenwood, 1 July 1792

To John Greenwood

Philadelphia July 1st 1792.

Sir,

Your letter of the first of May and the box which accompanied it came safe, and duly to hand on the eve of my departure for Virginia;1 which is the reason why I have not acknowledged the Receipt of them sooner.

The contents of the latter (with the alterations which were necessarily made) answered very well—and enclosed you have, in Bank notes, twenty dollars, the sum I have usually sent you,2 but if it is insufficient let me know it and more shall be forwarded by Sir Yr Obedt Hble Servt

Go: Washington

ALS, AU-M.

1Although Greenwood’s letter to GW of 1 May has not been found, the box that he enclosed apparently contained a set of dentures that GW had sent to Greenwood for alterations and repair. GW left Philadelphia for Mount Vernon on 10 May. For more information about GW’s dentures and his dealings with Greenwood, see GW to Greenwood, 16 Feb. 1791, and notes, and Greenwood to GW, 10 Sept. 1791, and note 1.

2On 16 Feb. 1791 GW had sent Greenwood $20 for a new set of false teeth “and the repairs of the old ones, and, etc.”
