4In his guardian accounts for this date, GW shows an expenditure of £10 for a piece of silk bought for Martha Parke Custis from the mercantile firm of Heslop & Blair in Fredericksburg. Isaac Heslop and Alexander Blair were merchants in the town.

5George Mitchell was a merchant in Fredericksburg.

6Mr. Brooke may be Richard Brooke, a planter in Spotsylvania County who lived near Fredericksburg.

7David Briggs was a merchant in Fredericksburg.

8Hamilton has not been identified. The expenditure was “for a pair of Earings” (GW’s Guardian Accounts, 1 May 1771).

9GW made an agreement on 30 Dec. 1769 with millwright John Ball of Frederick County to build his new merchant mill, and Ball began work in April 1770. 11GW paid the joiner Edward Rigdon an additional £26.13.2 for the house he and Richard Lake built for him in Alexandria (see General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. 12GW lent Robert Rutherford of Frederick County £5 in Williamsburg on 20 May 1769 and lent him this £20 at Colchester on 29 Aug. 1770 (see General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772.
