Rockaway bridge [N.J.] June 23. 1780 ½ after 6 OC.
Dr Sir
I received in the night at 12 & 3 OClock, Your Two Favors of Yesterday Evening in regular succession with respect to their dates. I have just heard several Cannon, but am still at a loss to know the design of them.1 I shall hold the Troops here in readiness till I receive further intelligence by which I may regulate myself.2 You will be so good as to advise me from time to time of matters; endeavouring as far as possible to ascertain the Enemy’s movements and the objects they have in view.3 I am Dr sir with great regard & esteem Yr Most Obedt st

1. GW had not yet received Greene’s first letter of this date (see Document I).
2. During this day, GW moved the four brigades with him five miles south to Whippany, New Jersey.
3. In addition to his first letter of this date, Greene sent GW an update at 11:00 A.M. GW’s aide-de-camp David Humphreys, who was with Greene, also advised GW of the situation at Springfield (see Documents III and IV).
