1. Letter not found. David Daggett (1764–1851), a staunch Connecticut Federalist, delivered a Fourth of July oration in 1799 to the citizens of New Haven. He entitled it Sunbeams May Be Extracted from Cucumbers, But the Process Is Tedious. On the same day, Zechariah Lewis, the former tutor of George Washington Parke Custis, gave to the Connecticut Society of the Cincinnati at New Haven An Oration, on the Apparent, and the Real Political Situation of the United States. Both speeches were printed in New Haven in 1799.
