The P returns Mr. Muters letter, and gives Mr. J an opportunity of reading one from Judge Innes on the same subject. The latter, commences his operations from the point, to which we have not yet been able to get, namely, established Posts in the Indian Country—the primary object of the Campaign, after the accomplishment of which, every thing else would be easy.
RC (DLC); addressed: “Mr. Jefferson”; endorsed by TJ as received 25 Dec. 1791. Entry in SJPL reads: “[G.]W. to Th:J. Innes’s and Muter’s letters on Indian war.”
George Muter’s letter is that of 17 Nov. 1791, which TJ had received only the day before. Before returning it to TJ Washington allowed Secretary of War Knox to read the letter (Knox to Washington, 25 Dec. 1791, DLC: Washington Papers). Harry Innes’ letter has not been found.
