From George Washington to Major General William Heath, 26 October 1779

To Major General William Heath

Head Quarters [West Point] Octor 26th 1779

Dr Sir,

I have received your favor of this date, and approve the disposition you have made. I do not recollect the ground in particular which you intend for your Encampment; no doubt it is proper, & my desire is that it should be for the accomodation of the Troops, and at the same time be as convenient to Verplanks point as could be—on acct of the work.1

You will be pleased to forward the inclosed letter for Genl Glover by the first opportunity.2 I am Dr Sr Yr Mo. Obet servt

Go: Washington

LS, in Richard Kidder Meade’s writing, MHi: Heath Papers; Df, DLC:GW; Varick transcript, DLC:GW.

1GW wrote the previous five words.

2A draft of the enclosed letter from GW to Brig. Gen. John Glover, this date, reads: “Your favor of the 18th Instant never came to hand till to day. In answer to it—I wish to refer You to a Letter I wrote yesterday to Genl Nixon in consequence of One I received from him on the same subject—and which I requested him to shew to You” (Df, in Robert Hanson Harrison’s writing, DLC:GW; Varick transcript, DLC:GW). Glover’s letter to GW of 18 Oct. has not been found, but GW’s response suggests that it presented concerns of Massachusetts army officers over delays in receiving their new commissions.
