From John Jay to Diego de Gardoqui, 20 May 1781

To Diego de Gardoqui

Aranjues 20 May 1781

Sir

Your Favor of the 18 Inst. came this Moment to my Hands.1 Nothing has been said to me of the Letter you mention. Mr. Carmichael informed me nevertheless that you was anxious for the Reciepts in Question & feared being blamed for the Delay. Your first Request for these Receipts was made long ago, and ought to have been at once complied with. With this View, I then and frequently since, desired Mr Carmichael, whom I had requested to enter them, to furnish me with a note of the Dates and Sums—but he did not deliver it to me till the 16th. Inst. I should then have instantly sent you the Rects., but the daily Expectation of your coming here induced me to think it better to wait a few Days for your Arrival, than risque their being brought to Madrid in your Absence. The Exactness and Punctuality with which all Transactions of this Kind should be conducted, makes me Regret the Delays of which you have Reason on this occasion to complain. I now enclose you a Copy of the Note he delivered me—2 be pleased to compare it with your own Entries & inform me whether they correspond. I will then immediately send you a Receipt either for the whole amount, or for each particular Payment, as may be most agreable to you. I am obliged to you for the Intelligence you communicate— I have no Reason [to] believe that the french Troops were landed. The action between the two Fleets from every account I have seen does much Honor to our Allies.

Mrs. Jay is delighted with Aranjues. It is without Exception the most charming Place I have ever seen. I hope soon to see you— Mrs. Jay & the Gentlemen of my Family present their Compliments to you— I am Sir with Sentiments of Respect & Regard Your obliged and most obedt. Servant

John Jay
