SIR,

IN conformity to a Resolution of the SOCIETY OF ARTISTS OF THE UNITED STATES, I have the honour to transmit you a Report of their Committee on the Rise, Progress, and Present State of the Society; together with a Catalogue of the original and other works in the Fine Arts now exhibiting at the Academy in this City.

Permit me Sir in my private capacity to enquire after your health;—It has always afforded me pleasure to learn of your welfare, and I cannot at this time when an opportunity offers, refrain from repeating to you the assurances of my high respect, and grateful acknowledgements, and a sincere prayer for your present & future happiness—

Enclosures: (1) Report of the Committee appointed to examine into the Rise, Progress, and Present State of The Society of Artists of the United States (Philadelphia, 1812). (2) Second Annual Exhibition of The Society of Artists of the United States, and the Pennsylvania Academy (Philadelphia, 1812).

The Society of Artists of the United States opened its second exhibition at the Pennsylvania academy of the Fine Arts on 4 May 1812. Mills displayed several of his own works, including one depicting the “Garden Front of Monticello House, the seat of Thos. Jefferson, Esq.” (Philadelphia Poulson’s American Daily Advertiser, 11 Mar. 1812; Second Annual Exhibition, 8 [no. 59]). Two views by Mills of the west or garden front of Monticello (one not built and the other very similar to what was executed) are at MHi (Stein, Worlds description begins Susan R. Stein, The Worlds of Thomas Jefferson at Monticello, 1993 description ends , 152–5).
