A List of Lands belonging to Geo: Washington in the Northern Neck—on wch Quit-rents became due—Michaelmas 1773.

Then received from George Washington the Sum of Sixteen pounds Thirteen Shillings and four pence in full for the Quit-rents of the above Thirteen thousand three hundred and thirty Eight Acres of Land to Michaelmas One thousand Seven hundred and Seventy three4 also the further sum of forty Nine Pound nineteen shillings and Eight pence in full for the years 1774 1775 & 1776.5

1. Although GW consistently referred to William Ashford as the man from whom he had bought this tract on 29–30 Jan. 1761, it was actually John Ashford who had sold him the land. John Ashford had, however, just bought the property from William Ashford on 27–28 Jan. (Fairfax County Deed Book D1, 823–28, 813–18, ViFfCh).

2. Most of GW’s Frederick County lands were now included in the bounds of the new Berkeley County which was formed from part of Frederick in 1772.

3. For GW’s acquisition of the 600–acre Chattins Run tract in Fauquier County, see Bryan Fairfax to GW, 20 Jan. 1772, n.1, 15 July 1772, n.2, and 3 Aug. 1772.

4. The remaining part of this receipt is written in Lund Washington’s hand.

5. Lund Washington recorded in his account with GW that he paid £66.13 in Virginia currency to Hough on 10 July 1777 for the years of 1773 through 1776 (General Ledger B description begins General Ledger B, 1772–1793. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 150).
