John Hancock Presidt

LS, DLC:GW.

1Hancock is referring to GW’s letter to him of 15 July which was laid before Congress on this date (JCC description begins Worthington Chauncey Ford et al., eds. Journals of the Continental Congress, 1774-1789. 34 vols. Washington, D.C., 1904–37. description ends , 5:574).

2The words “except the Inclos’d Resolves” are in Hancock’s writing. In the enclosed resolutions of 17 July, Congress approves of GW’s refusal to receive Lord Howe’s letter to him of 13 July, authorizes additional personnel and several new regulations for the hospital department, appoints officers for the German Battalion and an independent company, appoints a paymaster general for the flying camp, orders Col. William Smallwood to march his Maryland troops to the flying camp as rapidly as possible, and recommends the removal of livestock from the New Jersey coast (DLC:GW; see also JCC description begins Worthington Chauncey Ford et al., eds. Journals of the Continental Congress, 1774-1789. 34 vols. Washington, D.C., 1904–37. description ends , 5:567–72).
