1. Michael Huffnagle (Hoffnagle; 1753–1819), the prothonotary of the courts for Westmoreland County, Pa., was a young farmer who lived near Hannastown. He had served as an adjutant in the 8th Pennsylvania Regiment during the fall of 1776 with the rank of lieutenant and apparently had commanded a company in Col. Aeneas Mackay’s 8th Pennsylvania Regiment since December 1776 although he was not commissioned until this date (see Huffnagle to GW, c.1 July 1778, and Huffnagle’s commission, 16 Mar. 1777, in DNA: RG 93, Commissions, 1775–78). Huffnagle served on the frontier in the ranger service after leaving the Continental army in July 1778, and in January 1779 he was admitted to the Westmoreland County bar. Eliezer Miers had been named a captain in the 8th Pennsylvania Regiment in September 1776.
