1. Aquila Giles (1758–1822) of Maryland served in the hospital department before receiving this appointment. Captured by the British at or near Germantown, Pa., on 26 Jan. 1778, Giles was exchanged in November 1780 and promptly resumed his duties as an aide-de-camp to St. Clair serving until the end of the war (see John Beatty, list of American prisoners, 25 Dec. 1779, DNA:PCC, item 147). After the war Giles settled at Flatbush in Kings County, N.Y., where his wife inherited land (see Giles to GW, 28 Aug. 1783, DLC:GW). Giles was a member of the New York assembly from 1788 to 1793, and in 1792 GW appointed him federal marshal for the state of New York. Giles served as a lieutenant colonel in the Kings County militia from 1795 to 1800, and from 1800 to 1814 he was a brigadier general of the state militia commanding the 3d Brigade of cavalry. He became a military storekeeper for the U.S. Army in 1817.
