1. On this date Richard Holcombe received £5.10 from “His Excellency Genl Washington” for twenty-two “Suppers” and twenty-two “Breakfasts,” at 2s. 6d. each (NjHi; see also Vouchers and Receipted Accounts, 1776–1780, DLC:GW, ser. 5, vol. 29). GW dined at Holcombe’s again on 21–22 June 1778, paying for thirty-eight dinners (ibid.). GW’s military family expense account contains an entry for 27 July 1777 for £1.2.6 for cash paid “for Shoeing the Genls Horses at Cross Road” (DLC:GW, ser. 5, vol. 28).

2. The orderly book kept by Capt. Jacob Turner of the 3d North Carolina Regiment does not contain a copy of the general orders for this date, but it does contain Brig. Gen. Peter Muhlenberg’s orders for his brigade “to march tomorrow morning at 4 O’clock” (“Turner’s Orderly Book,” 478).
