5A sous-commis under Vergennes and later Montmorin, Geoffroy was the only member of their staff to desert the royalty during the Revolution. After he joined the Jacobins, his career prospered. He rose to first secretary, then chef du bureau, and finally head of the dépôt des archives: Frédéric Masson, Le Département des affaires étrangères pendant la Révolution, 1787–1804 (Paris, 1877), pp. 35, 140n, 166, 255–6.

6Jean-Nicolas Bonnefoÿ, BF’s gardener, occasionally ran errands: XXXIV, 5; XXXVII, 4.

7Doubtless BF’s letter of the previous day to Vergennes, above.
