Hotel d’Espagne March 24th:— 83.

Mr. Penn presents his Compts: to Mr. Franklin & has sent his Servt: for the Letters He did Him the honor to promise him. He means to leave Paris as soon as the Bearer returns.—6

6The letters included BF’s recommendation of Penn to John Dickinson, March 23, above; as Penn was first traveling to England, he also carried BF’s personal letters to friends there, including William Jones and Benjamin Vaughan. In June Penn sailed from Falmouth to New York. He resided in Philadelphia for five years but failed to win additional compensation for his family from the state government: Lorret Treese, The Storm Gathering: the Penn Family and the American Revolution (University Park, Pa., 1992), pp. 196–7.
