Savannah, December 2d, 1789.

Sir,

The letter which you will herewith receive I beleive respects the appointment of a Collector of the Customs for the Port and District of Brunswick, which is now vacant by the resignation of Mr Handley.1 Mr Hillary informs me he has applied for it; if he should meet with your approbation, I have no doubt but he will discharge his duty properly, being I beleive a Man of integrity and sufficient ability. John Habersham

Collector of the Customs at Savannah

John Habersham (1754–1799) served in the Georgia Continental line during the American Revolution, was captured at the fall of Savannah, and ended the war as a major. After the war he returned to manage the plantation left to him by his father, served in the Georgia assembly and in 1785 in the Continental Congress, and strongly supported ratification of the Constitution by his state. In August 1789 GW appointed Habersham collector of the customs at Savannah.

1. George Handley (1752–1793) was appointed collector of the customs at Brunswick, Ga., in August 1789. He resigned early in 1790 and was replaced in February 1790 by Christopher Hillary (1735–1796), a planter from Glynn County, Ga. (ibid., 387; DHFC description begins Linda Grant De Pauw et al., eds.
