To George Washington from Samuel Waldo, 25 October 1790

From Samuel Waldo

Portland [District of Maine], 25 Oct. 1790. Proposes himself as a candidate for the office of collector of excise if such is established and for his character refers GW to a letter James Bowdoin wrote some months ago to the president.1

For an identification of Samuel Waldo, nephew of Elizabeth Erving Bowdoin, wife of former Massachusetts governor James Bowdoin, see Bowdoin to GW, 17 July 1789.

1. The only letter that has been found from Bowdoin to GW mentioning Waldo is that of 17 July 1789. Bowdoin died on 6 Nov. 1790. Waldo did not receive an excise appointment and again applied unsuccessfully to the president for a federal post in the spring of 1791 (see Bowdoin to GW, 17 July 1789, n.1).
