Appointments of Vice-Consuls for Portugal

Philadelphia, 26 Apr.–6 July 1791. Commissions by Ignatius Palyart, Consul General for Portugal, appointing the following Vice-Consuls: under date of 26 Apr. 1791, James Barry for Maryland and Virginia, John Abrams for New York State, Francis James Ver Cnocke for South Carolina; under date of 6 July 1791, Richard Codman for Massachusetts.

Trs (DNA: RG 59, CD); four commissions in clerk’s hand, signed by Palyart; the date for that of Codman is inserted in the hand of Remsen. No letter transmitting these copies to TJ has been found. Palyart had been appointed consul general for Portugal (see Palyart to TJ, 5 Oct. 1790).
