To John Jay from Sarah Livingston Jay, 4 June 1792

From Sarah Livingston Jay

June 4th. 1792.1

My dr. Mr. Jay,

I sent my packet for you yesterday to Captn. Cahoon, but as he does not sail until this day I send you Loudon’s paper which contains some farther accounts respecting the Otsego votes.2 It is Mr. Jones’s opinion that the legality of them does not admit a question3— The people of Otsego, alarmed at what they think are attempts to violate ^their^ rights have deputized Jacob Morris to come to N.Y. & employ a Lawyer on their behalf; he has according employed R. Harrison4— Sanguine as Judge Hobart appears, I doubt from what some of our friends say, the inconsequence of those votes to your election— Judge Hobart told me they were slyly making preparations at Albany to welcome you there in your way to Vermont— but I told him that as I imagined they would be disappointed by not seeing you there, they had better be spared the expence & mortification— My Complts. to Mrs. Seton & Mrs. Farquar— their families are well

1The following is written before the dateline: “Peter Munro is not yet returned from Bedford—”

2The Diary, or, Loudon’s Register for 4 June included “A.B.”, reprinted from the New-York Journal, outlining allegations of voter fraud in Otsego County, a reprint from the Daily Advertiser (New York) of 2 June of “A Freeholder of the County of Otsego” and the attached statements of sheriffs Benjamin Gilbert and Richard R. Smith, and estimates of the votes of Dutchess and Orange Counties. For the clearance of the Sloop Aurora, bound for Newport, see the Diary, 5 June 1792.
