Go: Washington

LS, DNA: RG 46, Third Congress, 1793–95, Senate Records of Executive Proceedings, President’s Messages—Executive Nominations; LB, DLC:GW.

On 26 Feb. the Senate approved all these nominations except that of Constant Freeman, Jr., which was “postponed for further inquiry.” Freeman’s appointment was approved on 28 Feb. (Senate Executive Journal description begins Journal of the Executive Proceedings of the Senate of the United States of America: From the commencement of the First, to the termination of the Nineteenth Congress. Vol. 1. Washington, D.C., 1828. description ends , 174).

1This appointment was necessary because the Senate had rejected GW’s earlier nomination of William Aylett Lee (GW to the U.S. Senate, 29 Dec. 1794).

2Because the nominations for the First Sub Legion failed to account for the resignation of Capt. James Clay, the issuance of commissions to the five lieutenants was suspended until GW sent revised nominations to the Senate on 12 June.
