Expenses and Resources
Ca. 14 December 1799. Lists the estimated expenses of the state government for the year 30 Sept. 1799 to 1 Oct. 1800, totaling $444,660.00, and the “Resources to meet this estimate,” in the amount of $481,496.96. Followed by the committee’s explanation of several items, which concludes “that the taxes as they now stand, will be sufficient to defray the public exigencies.”1
Ms (Vi: House of Delegates, Bills). 2 pp. In a clerk’s hand. Headed “Estimate of the expences of the Civil government from September the 30th. 1799 to October 1st. 1800, and of the debts payable within the said period.”
1. On 4 Dec. 1799 JM was appointed a member of a committee of ten in the Virginia House of Delegates charged with preparing estimates of the state government’s expenses for the coming year. On 14 Dec. the committee, through its chairman, John Taylor of Caroline, made its report ( , Dec. 1799 [ 38954], pp. 7, 26).
