Mr. and Mrs. Mead’s Compliments to Mrs. Stephinson, and Doctor Franklin, and are sorry the day the Doctor was at leisure to have done them the favour of a Visit, did not fall out, to have accepted it; They hope the first convenient time the Doctor hath, he will; and that Mrs. Stephenson will be so good to bring the young Gentleman she mentioned!7 Mr. and Mrs. Mead will be at home any day, as they shall be every day!

6. Samuel Mead, possibly the writer of this note, was a customs commissioner and a member of the Royal Society. His sister may have lived on Craven Street. See above, X, 60 n.

7. Possibly WF’s illegitimate son, William Temple Franklin (D.1.1), born, according to his tombstone, Feb. 22, 1762. During BF’s second mission to England the child visited the Stevenson household from time to time and on at least one occasion accompanied Mrs. Stevenson on a visit to the country. He accompanied his grandfather to Philadelphia in 1775. A more extended account of his career will appear in a later volume.
