3. Dumas’ Aug. 10 letter to the president of Congress reported, among other political news, that the States General of the Netherlands had accepted without changes the draft Franco-Dutch treaty of defensive alliance as proposed by Vergennes. In a postscript, Dumas noted ja’s departure for London and Paris and his own precarious situation. National Archives.
Earlier on Aug. 10, Dumas had written a long letter to WTF that he also enclosed with the present letter. He thanked WTF for the news contained in his of Aug. 1, reported that he knew of TJ’s arrival, asked WTF to forward an enclosed letter to La Vauguyon, and promised to write to BF as soon as he learned the outcome of the treaty negotiations.
