Mr. Franklin’s Compliments to Mr. Canton, and is sorry to find that he cannot have the Pleasure of waiting on him this Evening, being oblig’d to attend a Committee at the Society of Arts;8 but as he expects to see Mr. Canton on Thursday at the Royal Society; some other Evening convenient to Mr. Canton may then be agreed on.
7. The Minute Book of the Society of Arts shows that, as indicated in this letter, BF attended a committee meeting on Nov. 24, 1760.

On the Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (sometimes called the Premium Society and now the Royal Society of Arts), and on BF’s election as a corresponding member in 1756, see above, VI, 186–9, 275–7, 458, 599–600. The Society’s records show that during 1760 BF attended twenty-three committee meetings and on December 3 accepted the co-chairmanship of the Committee of Colonies and Trade.
