Addressed: To The Honourable / The Commissioner or Commissioners / of the United States of America / at Paris / (No. 18) / (On public service) / (Duplicate) / To be sunk if in Danger of falling into the Hands of the Enemy
4. The ones we do not print are marked “Triplicate” and “Quadruplicate.”
5. For which see XXXII, 63n.
6. During the months covered by the present volume Hopkinson dispatched several other lists of loan office bills, compiled to help American commissioners in Europe distinguish valid certificates from counterfeit ones. On Oct. 23, as directed by the Board of the Treasury, he sent the numbers and denominations of interest bills issued to New York, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, South Carolina, Georgia, Connecticut, Delaware, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts. He also reported that as he had received no orders to provide similar information for the new emissions of larger bills, which were likely to become very complex, he would omit sending their numbers unless requested otherwise. On three occasions Hopkinson gave notice of duplicate sets of bills he had signed to replace original ones that had been lost: on Sept. 18, Nov. 3, and Nov. 6, he wrote that he had signed the fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth sets of various bills, amounting to $396, $72, and $156 respectively. All the documents mentioned are at the APS.
