Treasury Department, Revenue Office, January 4, 1793. “I have the honor to inform you that on the receipt of Mr. J. N. Cummings’s letter to you1 relative to the case of Mathias Brewer, I wrote to him for information on certain points, which appeared necessary.2 I desired him to communicate the same, with a general State of the Case, to the Supervisor.…3 I am in daily expectation of the papers and letters when I shall proceed in the adjustment of the matter.”

1. Letter not found. John N. Cumming of Newark, New Jersey, the operator of a stagecoach line, was active in procuring workmen for the Society for Establishing Useful Manufactures and in 1793 was elected a director of the society. He also served as a revenue officer in Newark.
2. The “case of Mathias Brewer” concerned a distillery in New Jersey. On December 31, 1792, Coxe asked Cumming for information on this case, requesting him to state “whether the distillery is in a city, town or village, and what is the aggregate of the contents of all the Stills therein, also furnish copies of the entry by him made, and of the License by you granted” (LC, RG 58, Letters of Commissioner of Revenue, 1792–1793, National Archives).
