Rucker died in 1788, and Constable continued the firm under the name of William Constable and Company. A native of London, Benjamin Walker had emigrated to America before the American Revolution and settled in New York City. During the war he was aide-de-camp to Baron von Steuben. In 1786 he was appointed commissioner to settle the accounts of the hospital, marine, and clothing departments.
