To Charles Cotesworth Pinckney
New York, March 5, 1800. States that Thomas Parker has recommended the Reverend William Hill for chaplain.1 Quotes from James McHenry’s letter of March 3, 1800.2
Df, in the handwriting of Thomas Y. How, Hamilton Papers, Library of Congress.
1. Thomas Parker to H, October 29, December 19, 1799 (both listed in the appendix to this volume). For Hill, see H to James McHenry, January 2, 1800, note 3.
2. In this letter, which is listed in the appendix to this volume, McHenry wrote: “It would be perfectly agreeable to me that the Troops had their Chaplain but there are objections which I am inclined to think will procrastinate the appointments, and possible events which may render them as far as the new Regiments are concerned unnecessary. I shall however see if any thing can be done with propriety in the case. Mr. Hill has strong pretensions and meets my approbation.”
