From Alexander Hamilton to John Nicholson, [25 August 1794]

[Philadelphia, August 25, 1794. The description of this letter in the dealer’s catalogue reads: “Regarding damage done to his house by heavy rains and the need to repair the trouble.” Letter not found.]

1. Nicholson, a native of Wales and a resident of Philadelphia, was the most important fiscal officer in Pennsylvania from 1782 to 1794. In 1782 the legislature appointed him comptroller general of the state. While holding this office he was also appointed receiver general of taxes in 1785 and escheator general in 1787. Although he was impeached in 1794, the state Senate acquitted him on April 11, 1794, and on the same day he resigned as comptroller.
