Shadwell 6th November 1801
Dear Sir
Those notes which you mention was disposd of immediately aftar they were receivd & in case of failure in the bank it appears that the holder of the Note must be the sufferer, it was requisite for me to put my Name on them. Mr. Randolph does not take shadwell as supposd. William Davenport has made application shoud you approve of him you will please let me no. Aftar Constant Application Wood has furnish the plat which is inclosd. I am about to engage with a numbar of the Miltonians for fire Wood they prefer getting of me to Henderson & was I not to contract with them Henderson woud receave the pay. & in all probability one half woud cut of & pillage your land more than it is & you receave no pay. therefore I thought it to your interest to encourage them & wish your centiments. from the manner which it is laid of it will be difficult to confine persons to one lott.

RC (ViU); endorsed by TJ as received 11 Nov. and so recorded in SJL; also endorsed by TJ: “Henderson’s land.” Enclosure: Plat of the lands in Albemarle County belonging to the heirs of Bennett Henderson, locating the property in relationship to the Rivanna River, the town of Milton, and surrounding lands owned by Edward Carter, Kemp Catlett, a member of the Reynolds family, and TJ; the lands being divided into four tracts—property below the town, the back lands, and the upper and lower fields—and each partitioned into ten allotments; with dower rights of Elizabeth Lewis Henderson also marked (MS in same; undated; originally on two conjoined pieces; in William Woods’s hand, with later emendations in TJ’s hand assigning the names of individual Henderson legatees to the allotments, indicating the acreage of Milton and of portions of some allotments in the back lands, and marking other features including the Henderson dam and mill and a prospective mill site between Milton and the Rivanna River; TJ also outlining in red ink the allotments to the Henderson heirs Sarah, James, Isham, and Charles; attested by Woods: “A Copy of the Plat of the Land belonging to the Legatees of Bennett Henderson decd. in Albemarle County—Copied for Craven Peyton by Wm. Woods SAC”; endorsed by Woods; endorsed by TJ: “Henderson’s. Plat of division”; with notation on verso in TJ’s hand:
