Dr. Andrew Kean, father of John V. Kean, first librarian of the University of Virginia, was leaving Charlottesville. TJ regretted that he could not put himself for the remainder of his life under Dr. Kean’s “soothing care” (TJ to Kean, 27 Jan. 1825; Kean to TJ, 19 Feb. 1825; Bruce, University of Virginia, ii, 197 description begins Philip A. Bruce, History of the University of Virginia, 1819-1919, New York, 1920-1922, 5 vols. description ends ).

Correctly 11 Feb. 1825.

James Madison Randolph attended only the first session of the University of Virginia, which opened on this date. George Long (1800-1879) was professor of ancient languages from 1825 to 1828 and Thomas Hewett Key (1799-1875) was professor of mathematics from 1825 to 1827. TJ’s grandsons Benjamin F. and Meriwether Lewis Randolph also attended the University, Ben in 1825, 1826, 1829, and 1830, and Lewis from 1826 to 1830 (Students of the University of Virginia: A Semicentennial Catalogue with Brief Biographical Sketches [Baltimore, 1878]; Clemons, Notes on the Professors, p. 82-7 description begins Harry Clemons, Notes on the Professors for Whom the University of Virginia Halls and Residence Houses Are Named, Charlottesville, Va., 1961 description ends ).

George W. Spooner, John M. Perry’s son-in-law, was associated with the construction of the University of Virginia (Woods, Albemarle, p. 295; Bruce, University of Virginia, i, 250, 252-3 description begins Edgar Woods, Albemarle County in Virginia, 1901, repr. Bridgewater, Va., n.d. description ends ).

Correctly $251.

TJ took Francis Eppes’ copy of the first of Sir Edward Coke’s Institutes of the Laws of England, furnishing him its value in other books in exchange (TJ to Eppes, [6] Apr. 1825). Although he had suffered from its tediums as a youth, TJ always considered “Coke Littleton,” as he called Coke’s commentary on Thomas Littleton’s Tenures, the “very best elementary work for a beginner in the study of the law” (TJ to Thomas Cooper, 16 Jan. 1814; TJ to James Madison, 17 Feb. 1826; Sowerby, No. 1781 description begins E. Millicent Sowerby, comp., Catalogue of the Library of Thomas Jefferson, Washington, D.C., 1952-1959, 6 vols. description ends ; Edward Dumbauld, Thomas Jefferson and the Law [Norman, Okla., 1978], p. 11-12).

Ellen Wayles Randolph and Joseph Coolidge, Jr., who had been married in the Monticello parlor on 27 May, were setting out on a six-week journey to their home in Boston (Malone, Jefferson, vi, 456-62 description begins Dumas Malone, Jefferson and His Time, Boston, 1948-1981, 6 vols. description ends ).

John Hemings spent the summer at Poplar Forest repairing damage caused by a winter fire (TJ to Francis Eppes, 17 Feb., [6] Apr. 1825; Eppes to TJ, 25 Feb. 1825).

Benjamin F. Randolph.

Because of his poor health TJ was unable to attend the dinner at the University given for the Marquis de Lafayette, who was making his farewell visit to Monticello (Richmond Enquirer, 6 Sep. 1825).

TJ’s slave Anne (b. 1807) was the daughter of Wormley and Ursula. Maria (b. 1807) was the daughter of Joe Fosset and Edy.

TJ paid for two numbers of the North American Review, at this time a quarterly edited in Boston by Jared Sparks (1789-1866). TJ had been a subscriber at least since the beginning of the editorship of Edward Everett (1794-1865) in 1820 and corresponded with both editors (William F. Gray to TJ, 5 Aug. 1825; Mott, American Magazines, ii, 218-61 description begins Frank L. Mott, A History of American Magazines, 1741-1850, New York, 1930, 2 vols. description ends ; TJ to Sparks, 4 Feb. 1824).

That is, Bernard Peyton.

TJ himself never saw Weyer’s Cave, a natural limestone cavern in northeastern Augusta County; it was not discovered until 1806.

Benjamin F. Randolph.

TJ asked the Coolidges to procure him a cask of brandy and a supply of dunfish and cod tongues and sounds (TJ to Ellen Coolidge, 14 Nov. 1825).

On 17 May 1825, when his chronic dysuria became acute, TJ had called in Dr. Robley Dunglison (1798-1869), the young English professor of anatomy and medicine at the University of Virginia. TJ’s condition confined him to the house for most of the rest of the year. Dunglison, who was at the beginning of a distinguished career, acted as TJ’s trusted physician until his death (The Jefferson-Dunglison Letters, ed. John M. Dorsey [Charlottesville, Va., 1960]; The Autobiographical Ana of Dr. Robley Dunglison, M.D., ed. Samuel X. Radbill [Philadelphia, 1963], p. 26-9, 32-5).
