Jeremiah A Goodman

MS (NNGL, on deposit NHi); in TJ’s hand, signed by TJ and Goodman; endorsed by TJ: “Goodman Jeremiah A. 1817. July 30.”; with notation on verso in Goodman’s hand, signed by Goodman and witnessed by Benjamin Whaler: “September the tenth day 1817 I Assign the benefit of the within to John L Oneal”; followed by three notations in unidentified hands, the first signed by O’Neal and witnessed by Michael Johnson: “1817 Decr 18th I assign the within to Wayt & Winn value recd,” the second signed by Twyman Wayt: “1821 March 5th Recd Draft on Bernard Peyton for the within,” and the third reading: “Thos Jeffersons note $1.”

The account of the 16th day of december 1816, not found, was presumably enclosed in Goodman’s missing letter to TJ of 15 Dec. 1816, accounted for above at TJ to Joel Yancey, 21 Dec. 1816. On 5 Mar. 1821 TJ settled this debt by giving Twyman Wayt, the ultimate assignee, a draft on Bernard Peyton for $219.72 (TJ to Peyton, 4 Mar. 1821; MB description begins James A. Bear Jr. and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767–1826, 1997, The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends , 2:1372). The deed for the sale of Sally Goodman has not been found.
