Edward Ingersoll (1790–1841), attorney and author, was the son of TJ’s acquaintance Jared Ingersoll. The younger Ingersoll was a native of Philadelphia who graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1808 and was admitted to the Philadelphia bar three years later. Between 1812 and 1814 he served as deputy attorney general for Pennsylvania under his father. Ingersoll wrote poetry under a pseudonym and published two legal compilations. He also engaged in political commentary and was a supporter and correspondent of Henry Clay. Ingersoll had assumed the editorship of the analectic magazine following Robert Walsh’s departure from the position around the end of 1818 (Port Folio 7 [1819]: 336–7).
