MS (MHi); beginning in Ingersoll’s hand and remainder in a clerk’s hand; undated; addressed by Ingersoll: “Thomas Jefferson Esq Monticello Virginia”; franked; postmarked Philadelphia, 28 Feb.; endorsed by TJ as an undated letter from Ingersoll received 4 Mar. 1820 and so recorded in SJL.

Edward Ingersoll (1790–1841), attorney and author, was the son of TJ’s acquaintance Jared Ingersoll. The younger Ingersoll was a native of Philadelphia who graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1808 and was admitted to the Philadelphia bar three years later. Between 1812 and 1814 he served as deputy attorney general for Pennsylvania under his father. Ingersoll wrote poetry under a pseudonym and published two legal compilations. He also engaged in political commentary and was a supporter and correspondent of Henry Clay. Ingersoll died in Florence, Italy (Lillian Drake Avery, comp., A Genealogy of the Ingersoll Family in America 1629–1925 [1926], 162; Will J. Maxwell, comp., General Alumni Catalogue of the University of Pennsylvania [1917], 26; John Hill Martin, Martin’s Bench and Bar of Philadelphia [1883], 280; John Adems Paxton, The Philadelphia Directory and Register, for 1813 [Philadelphia, 1813]; Henry Graham Ashmead, History of Delaware County, Pennsylvania [1884], 245; Clay, Papers description begins James F. Hopkins and others, eds., The Papers of Henry Clay, 1959–92, 11 vols. description ends ; Ingersoll, A Digest of the Laws of the United States of America, From March 4th, 1789, to May 15th, 1820 [Philadelphia, 1821]; Ingersoll, An Abridgment of the Acts of Congress Now in Force, excepting those of private and local application: with Notes of Decisions, giving construction to the same, in the Supreme Court of the United States [Philadelphia, 1825]; A. M‘Elroy’s Philadelphia Directory, for 1841 [1841], 131).

Ingersoll had assumed the editorship of the analectic magazine following Robert Walsh’s departure from the position around the end of 1818 (Port Folio 7 [1819]: 336–7).
