To James Madison from James Monroe, [ca. 15 June] 1813
From James Monroe
[ca. 15 June 1813]
I have not seen Mr. Tazewell & therefore can add nothing to what I have already said respecting genl. Taylor. I am under a strong impression that Winder, Howard & Taylor ought if possible to be appointed.1 Perhaps, if there should be any difficulty in the business, it may be well, to send in only a part of the nominations to day. By the above, I do not mean, that2 Parkers pretentions ought to be overlooked.
RC (DLC: Rives Collection, Madison Papers). Unsigned. Docketed by JM, “Js. Monroe during war of 1812.” Undated; conjectural date assigned on the basis of evidence presented in n. 1.
1. In a message dated 15 June 1813 and received by the Senate on 18 June, JM nominated William H. Winder, Benjamin Howard, Thomas Parker, and four others to be brigadier generals. On 10 July he nominated Robert B. Taylor for the same rank ( , 2:355–56, 384, 386).
2. JM inserted an asterisk here with a corresponding note at the bottom of the page: “Genl. Ths. P.” For Parker’s “pretentions,” see his letters to JM of 20 and 23 Apr. 1813.
