Receipt of John Francis Mercer, 11 October 1783

Receipt of John Francis Mercer

MS (Morristown National Historical Park, Morristown, N.J.).

Oct. 11. 1783

Recd fm. Loan of the Honble Jas Madison Six hundred Dollars.

John F Mercer1

1JM and Mercer were in Princeton on 11 October (JCC description begins Worthington Chauncey Ford et al., eds., Journals of the Continental Congress, 1774–1789 (34 vols.; Washington, 1904–37). description ends , XXV, 670–71). The “Dollars” were probably either the currency of Pennsylvania or New Jersey. In a letter of 12 November 1784 to JM, Mercer apologized for his delay in repaying the debt, arranged for the remittance of $400, and promised to discharge the balance as soon as his “Crops can be converted into Cash” (LC: Madison Papers). A part of the debt was still unpaid in 1803 (JM to Mercer, 11 Aug. 1803).
